Basque Coast

Lekeitio, something for everyone

A favorite coastal town with lovely beaches and a historic quarter that hugs the coastline, Leketio was founded in 1325. The city has a long history as an important commercial fishing port, shipbuilding port and more recently tourist spot rivaling that of San Sebastian but much lesser known.

Come to enjoy the lovely beaches of Isunza and the nearby Carraspio for the day and spend time walking around the old historic streets of Leketio. Visit the church of Santa María, a gothic basilica from the 15th century. Lekeitio is also the birthplace of Resurrección María de Azkue, one of the most important Basque scholars of the 19th century. Another curiosity, the town is famous for its festival in early September that dates back to the 5th century in honor of the patron of the town, San Antolin during the festival participants literally hang by the neck of a goose! Something you have to see to believe.
