    The neighborhood of Andra Mari of Araia in Alava has a long history of sheep herding, the day of the shepherd or Día del Pastor o Artzain Eguna (in Basque) is celebrated in mid-August. There are loads of activities from Idaizabal cheese tastings, watching the amazing sheep herding dogs in action, an art fair and traditional musicians.

    Semana Grande


    Aste Nagusia or Semana Grande is celebrated in Bilbao every third week of August. The nine-day festival includes nightly fireworks displays, free concerts, cultural dances, athletic competitions, dancing in the streets and the largest culinary contest in the Basque Country the Sukalki. For over thirty years the cooks and the chefs of the Basque Country have hosted an annual cooking contest during Aste Nagusia, participants from all over the province of Vizcaya come to the capital to compete in the Sukaldaritza Lehiaketa contest. The six day cook off is set along the banks of the historic river Nervion, participants are asked to prepare a different dish each day from a simple tortilla de patata or Spanish potato omelette, to more elaborate dishes such as rabo de toro or ox tail stew. If you are in town this week it is worth visiting the contest for a wonderful chance to witness local gastronomy in action.
