Artxanda Funicular, a step back in time

Opened in 1915 Artxanda was a favorite urban get away from the bustle of industrial Bilbao in the 19th century. Originally a popular leisure destination Artxanda is the name of the mountain range that hugs Bilbao to the north, this is where the residents would go to spend the weekend having a picnic or enjoying the views of the cities and valleys below.

At its peak there was a theme park, a casino, sports complex and hotel at the top of the mountain. Today, there are still a handful of restaurants, and park area for locals to enjoy. The top of Artxanda offers visitors a unique perspective of Bilbao from a bird’s eye view. Taking the funicular is like taking a step back in time.

If you venture up, (best on a sunny day) make sure to visit one of the classic restaurants for a drink or some ‘rabas’, fried squid – a popular treat for the locals, served mostly on the weekends. To catch the funicular head a few blocks north of Zubizuri bridge, on the right bank of the River Nervión, within walking distance of the Guggenheim Museum. Trams run every 15 minutes throughout the day. Tickets can be bought at the stations, or the Barik card can be used.
