Basque people love to gather with friends and family to share a meal. The traditional Basque txoko dates back to the 1800’s. Traditionally an all male gastronomic cooking society, today's txoko's are an institution open to all, a place for a groups, including women and children to come together to experiment new ways of cooking, eating and socializing. 

For foodies and amateur chefs this is a chance to shop in the market for the regions best local products. Haggle for goods, and then let us prepare them for you at a local txoko in Bilbao. If you are a cook and would like to do some experimenting yourself, we can also provide a fully stocked kitchen where you can try your hand at preparing the local cuisine, or just sit back, relax and let us prepare your meal.

Txoko in Basque translates to nook or cozy corner. Typical txokos are a casual family affair and they include a kitchen and a long table with many chairs for large groups. 

Where will we shop?

The Mercado de la Ribera with it’s over 10,000 sqm of space is the largest covered market in Europe. Its stalls are filled with the freshest local fish, meats, vegetables, cheeses and delicacies available. We can also visit some of the specialty shops in the Casco Viejo.

Customized menus to choose from. We will take you on a tour of the market, provide a fully stocked kitchen and can provide the cooks to prepare the meal, or get involved and learn how to make local dishes. 

Menus include local wine and beverages to accompany the meal. A fully stocked kitchen and casual txoko seating. The txoko is a shared space so please be respectful. Recommended for groups of 4 or more. Tour only available for lunch Tuesday to Saturday during market operating hours. Local fiestas and holidays not available.
