The Makila Cofradia is a Basque gastronomic society started in 2003 with members from all over Bizkaia from Mungia, Bermeo, Karrantza, Mundaka and Sopuerta among others. They are composed of txoko chefs, restaurant owners, food industry professionals and passionate cooks responsible for organizing, judging and promoting local cooking contests. Their philosophy is to promote, spread and share local Basque gastronomy with others. Promoting quality ingredients, traditional recipes, local cuisine and public participation they all share a passion for food and friendship

Aste Nagusia or Semana Grande is celebrated in Bilbao every fourth week of August. The nine-day festival includes nightly fireworks displays, free concerts, traditional dance, athletic competitions, parties in the streets and the largest culinary contest in the Basque Country.

Participants from all over the province of Bizkaia come to the capital to compete in theSukaldaritza Lehiaketa cooking contest. The six day cook off is set along the banks of the historic river Nervion, participants are asked to prepare a different dish each day from a simple tortilla de patata or Spanish potato omelette, to more elaborate dishes such as rabo de toro or ox tail stew.

If you are interested in participating we can care of all the arrangements. Choose to observe the contest and bid on one of the prize-winning dishes, or take part and prepare your own dish, learn how to cook like a local and participate in the contest. We will provide all the necessary materials and a local chef to help explain how the dish is made.
