Basque Cider Tour

Sidra or fermented apple cider has been a popular drink since the middle ages. The tradition of sidra production in this area dates back to over a thousand year ago, with the first records of apple orchards dating back to 1014. Astigarraga is the heart of sidra production, with the highest concentration of sidrerias in the Basque Country.

Passed down for generations the traditional farm houses and apple orchards in this mountainous and rolling valley have required skilled and hearty families who have dedicated their lives to growing apples to produce this local beverage. The guided visit will take you inside a traditional farmhouse where kids will get to enjoy traditional arts and crafts. Learn about the history and production of sidra and the lifestyle of early farmers.

Afterwards enjoy one of the favorite local past times, sharing a group meal at a traditional sidreria. Hearty dishes of tortilla de bacalao, croquetas, t-bone steak and all the sidra or sparkling apple juice you can drink, served from traditional wooden caskets which locals call “txotx”!
